Day 8 – Lori’s Bday Breakfast & CityCat

Not a whole lot to write about today… Except LORI’S BIRTHDAY!! Technically that’s Wednesday but we had her birthday party this morning with some family and friends 🙂 we had brekkie at the Northshore Riverside Cafe in Hamilton (a burb of Brissy) in the port area of the river. We had cake in the park next door and took a few pics.

The CityCat is public transportation on a catamaran up and down the river. We went from our point, to the end (St. Lucia) and back again. It was a nice long boat ride, took over 3 hours! Got to see lots of points of the city that I’ve been to, but from the water perspective; like Newstead House and the botanical gardens.

On the way home we went through a part of Brisbane so I could get a couple photos of a classic type of architecture called a “Queenslander”. Essentially it’s a raised bungalow, and by raised I mean on stilts. They have gorgeous verandas (like Newstead House), and were designed to keep cool (air flow below the house) and dry (off the ground). Have a look at the pics, I put a few on there. Lovely places!!

High/Low:
High: Lori’s party & meeting everyone
Low: My eggs were kinda undercooked & cold LOL
WOD: Togs. A bathing suit. Brings new meaning to the store Bonny Togs!

Day 7 – Gold Coast

Today we went south about an hour to the Gold Coast!

The first place we saw was Sanctuary Cove, a very exclusive pricy place full of ‘California Bungalows’, yachts and pricy shops. I’ve decided Scott and I are going to buy a place there when we win the lottery! See the video I posted on my YouTube channel (http://youtu.be/A9Runx06aIc).

We went around via the Gold Coast Hinterland, and Mount Tambourine. They have a lovely village there just like Montville, shops similar again to Niagara on the Lake. We went up to Eagle Heights Mountain Resort. You can see down the mountain all the way to the skyscrapers at Surfer’s Paradise. Had a lunch, the kids bounced on a bouncy castle, I took lovely photos and then we headed down to Surfer’s Paradise.

The beach there was (of course) beautiful, there were surfers, but no good ones haha!! They had a surf school on the beach, and probably for the first time I actually considered learning to surf. Not this trip, but maybe someday!

On our list of big things to see and do we stopped in Yatala at the big pie! I’m learning pies (meat pies) are big here… They have them at sporting events like how we have hot dogs, so naturally there are specialty oie shops. Like the one in Fernvale on our Toowoomba visit. So this one was in Yatala – I got a chicken mornay and a steak and mushroom. The next big thing we were supposed to see is (ironically) a huge spider on an outhouse!! But it was too dark out, so we are hopefully going to see it on another trip south. 🙂

High/Low:
High: Surfer’s Paradise!
Low: the traffic
WOD: Chippy: a carpenter. Or how you offer fries to a kid “would you like a chippy??”

Day 6 – Sunshine Coast

Today was an early start as we drive north to the Sunshine Coast! We made sure yesterday to get a whole whack of brochures of all the places were going, so we brought the Sunshine Coast ones with us 🙂 The Sunshine Coast starts about an hour north of Brisbane. We contemplated being there for the sunrise, but instead I, going to try sunrise shots in Airlie Beach and see how they go (that’s next week).

On the drive up we past Aussie World and the Ettamogah Pub (like a them park), as well as the BIG PINEAPPLE!! Lori has this book of big things in Australia (roadside attractions) and her goal is to see all of them. So next to the Big Pineapple is the BIG MACADAMIA NUT!! So we snapped a couple pics and kept moving 🙂

First stop was Mooloolaba Beach where I took lots of picture of the surf, and we found our first willing guys to say hello to Elissa. In case I haven’t mentioned that, I’m taping Aussie guys saying hello to my friend Elissa because she couldn’t fit in my suitcase and she JUST LOVES the Aussie accent. So “Project Elissa” is all for her!! Haha They were lifeguards (they call them lifesavers) named Ricky and Trey? Tr-something. I called him Trey so I hope he wasn’t offended! 75

Next beach was Coolum. I was standing by some rocks shooting video of this, and the water came right up to where I was and I couldn’t back up as there were rocks behind me. I was so far from the water I didn’t think it would get to me! So wet shoes it is, luckily I wore my Croc sandals! Sneaky surf.

Then we went to Noosa, and a national park lookout spot. Saw some scrub turkeys too! Black feathers, bald red heads and a yellow wattle. Met a lollipop man along the way in Noosa (what we call a flag person) but their stop signs are round and look like lollipops! Haha. Noosa is known for being a high end shopping destination so everybody who’s anybody shops there, we were part of the elite; even driving by….

On the way home we stopped in Montville. Once you get away from the coast, more inland they call it the Hinterland. Montville is part of the Hinterland in the Blackall Range (mountains). Absolutely beautiful country — and one I’m thankful I got to see having Australians tour me around, rather than just coming myself! Montville had these great quaint shops — reminded me a lot of Niagara-on-the-Lake. We passed through Maleny on our way back to the highway (and grabbed snacks at the smallest cutest McDonalds ever! We were also driving on the ‘Steve Irwin Hwy’ and passed Australia Zoo which he founded 😦 I loved his show, he was a crazy person! Lori doesn’t like him though hahaha!!!

High/Low
High: I loved Mooloolaba beach and those lifeguards letting me film them 🙂
Low: Still getting the dizzies every afternoon. Very unpleasant.
WOD: Pokies. These are slot machines 🙂 I saw a sign for Pokies at a pub and had to ask!!

Day 5 – Lockyer Valley – Toowoomba

We travelled west today into the Lockyer Valley. It’s a really nice (rural) area full of farm lands with cows, emus, fruit & veggies etc. It’s where I saw my first kangaroo sign and first koala sign, although I didn’t get a photo of that. We took the Scenic Rim tourist drive which took us all around the farm lands, and quite frankly got us a little lost at one point! Thank God for google maps and iPhones!

Then we headed to Grantham and I learned all about the huge flood from 2011 – which I remember seeing on TV in Canada, mostly focusing on Brisbane. I also remember Lori posting photos they took from town when it was all happening. In Grantham there is a train bridge the people were actually stuck on, and the water pretty much covered the whole thing and wiped out the town. They have relocated a lot if families to higher ground and built new homes for them. And there was a shiny new outdoor public toilet I used – the silver lining of flooding I guess?! Anyway, all of this rushing water came down from a little further west, the Great Dividing Range, mad flowed eastward to Brisbane and drained into the ocean. We got to see the starting point of the flood, and small creek that is barely bigger than a gutter drain!! That was in Toowoomba.

So up the Range we stopped at Picnic Point park. A great lookout over the valley. Saw a kookaburra and took an awesome pic of him (that I’ll have to share later) with an Australian flag behind him – couldn’t get more patriotic!!

After Toowoomba we stopped in Fernvale for the “best” meat pies in Queensland. They actually claim they have the largest variety of pies in the country! Pretty lofty statement – I want proof!! I got a chicken curry and a chicken satay pie (ate the curry — amazing!). Lori got a regular beef and a mushroom beef, Lynda got a lamb and something… Thyme or rosemary? Can’t remember! Haha but anyway, they’re good. They also had ones made of kangaroo, crocodile, emu, venison etc. crazy! Also a side note: at sporting events they eat meat pies, not hot dogs!!

Last on the agenda was Wivenhoe Dam – it’s where they get their water from. And it’s at 99% capacity so they are all very happy. I can really imagine it empty! It looks like a little Muskoka lake people would boat on lol!! We definitely don’t have to worry about water shortages in Ontario!

Then an hour drive back, and a quick trip to the liquor store again haha!! 🙂

High/Low
High: Toowoomba was pretty cool. Nice little place 🙂
Low: The traffic out if Toowoomba. Construction sucks everywhere!! It’s universal!!
WOD: Barry Crocker “I’ve had a Barry Crocker”. Used to describe when you do something wrong like parking your car crooked. Crocker rhymes with shocker. Kinda like in Oceans 11 – “Barney Rubble, trouble…” Haha!

Day 4 – Brisbane, Newstead House

Today was an early start for sunrise pictures! Sun came up around 6:30, and we viewed it from Mount Coot-tha which faces east toward Brisbane, the sunrise and the ocean 🙂 There were all kinds of bicycle riders going up the mountain as we were driving — goo for them! One woman at the top said she goes up there every morning!!

After Mount Coot-tha we headed over to Newstead House. It’s an early settlement house that has been added onto over the years. It’s such a beautiful spot and the verandah is gorgeous! Overlooks the river (Brisbane River of course). It the oldest example of a “Queenslander” style home, the oldest surviving residence, and is part of the Queensland Historical Trust. It reminded me of going to Pioneer Village and looking at our “old” stuff in Canada. There was also my first big ugly spider, we don’t know what it’s called but its a common garden spider — and much larger than our spiders! I’ll post a pic in a bit.

We headed over to an area of Brisbane called Portside where Lori aspires to live someday! Kind of similar to living along the lakeshore in Toronto. Lots of expensive shops, cafés, a movie theatre and its all along the Brisbane River. We had lunch at a fish and chip place called Fresh & Wild, and I had the Flake — which is shark!! (Sorry Shirl). It was good, a light coloured fish which surprised me for some reason. It’s not as flakey or oily as a halibut, so I think a lot of people would like it, it’s not overly fishy.

High/Low:
High: Newstead House
Low: the spider!!

WOD: Ute: is a truck here, very common, that’s like half car, half flatbed.

Day 3 – Brisbane City

I hit the hay very early last night, I was home (staying with Lynda as she has more room) by 7:30 and asleep more than likely by 8:00! I was falling asleep at dinner. Thankfully I slept all night, except between 3 and 4 I was awake playing Bejeweled, and woke to my alarm at 7.

We drove into Brisbane, parked the car, and walked up to King George Square. Thankfully most parks in Brisbane have free wifi! That made me very excited, thus the random additions of photos while we were there.

Took a tour of city hall, and went up an elevator (they call them lifts here) to the clock tower, so I got some nice photos of the surrounding city. A nice mix of sandstone older buildings, new shiny skyscrapers and beautiful parks.

Has lunch at a restaurant in King George Square called Groove Train. Gets points for coolest restaurant name ever. I had a chicken satay with rice and it was DELICIOUS.

They have something called a city sights bus, it’s a transit bus that’s free and takes you to all the major sights, you can hop on and hop off — I think all cities should have that!!

We took the bus to the river and a spot called the Eagle Street Pier, lots of restaurants and patios, overlooking the river and the Story Bridge. Great spot for a “session”. Speaking of stories heres a true story:

Carolyn: What is the river called?
Lori: Brisbane River. We’re simple people, we don’t like to complicate things.
Carolyn: Makes sense.
*go city hall, see a room, look at the name plate it reads ‘Brisbane Room’, realize Lori is correct*

Lori and family play a game they call “high low”, go around and ask what the high point of your day was and the low. So I’ll include that after each blog and my word of the day!

Word of the Day: Drongo. An idiot or dope. Said in a joking manner – it’s not a major insult.
High: Botanical Gardens & long sleep!
Low: Was feeling dizzy again this aft (had that a lot yesterday, seems to happen when I travel).

And now we’re running to Woolworths quick (I know right?!) and then watching “Building Australia” on the History Channel. Good night!

Day 2 – Flight to Australia & “Orientation” Day

Hey all!

Well I finally made it to the land of Oz! The flight was quite long, 14 hours. I was worried I wouldn’t sleep; when Scott and I honeymooned in Egypt the day we got there I was like a zombie, I nearly fell asleep in my chicken curry. Mostly it was because I got very little sleep on our first flight from Toronto to Frankfurt (8 hours). So THIS time I came prepared, namely, DRUGS. I got myself some sleeping pills to help my flight go quicker.

The thing you need to know about me and medication is, I don’t react to a lot of them very well. So I get nervous when I’m on a new medication for whatever reason. This was no different. There I am, in a dark plane, popping sleeping pills. Once it starts to kick in (“uh oh, that’s not normal…”) then the worry hits. Am I supposed to feel like this? Is my throat closing? Maybe I should call the flight attendant and explain myself. Panic, panic, swallowing water hard as I’m still convinced my throat is closing and swallowing water feels like glue. My whole body is getting hot (more from me panicking in silence than the meds I think), and I’m getting drowsy, but now I’m fighting it. Only 11 more hours to go… Oh God. But, the next thing I notice is I only have 9 hours to go, hmm I just slept 2 hours? Ok good! I close my eyes, open them and suddenly only 6 hours to go, then 3, and that’s when it wore off. Pretty good I’d say!!

So, I landed safely and was met by my family down here – both women were crying! How touching!! It’s so good to see them again, and we can’t believe it’s been 3 years since their visit to Canada.

Today was “Orientation Day” on my schedule made for me by Lori. Basically her mandate is to drive me around, show me things, and keep me awake!! So we drove around suburbs of Brisbane, we saw Redcliffe where we had breakfast on a patio – I ordered the “American” breakfast which was 2 fried eggs, a pancake and bacon all smothered in maple syrup! Ascot & Clayfield (the she-she-foo-foo area) and we stopped at the Clayfield Market for fresh fruits and veggies. We also went to a liquor store where I learned that liquor here is VERY pricy! $40 for a 26er of Smirnoff Vodka?? You’ve got to be kidding me!

Now we are just getting ready for supper. As I log off I’ll teach you a new word I learned today! Bogan: person who takes little pride in his appearance, spends his days slacking and drinking beer. LOL!!

DAY 1!!

OMG!!! It’s officially here!!! DAY 1!

Technically I still have 1 more sleep but who are we kidding?! I’m not gonna sleep!!

So right off the bat my flight is changed. Instead of an easy direct flight to LA, now I have to fly to New York first. I’m kinda pissed, I book direct flights for a reason! The good news about that is my layover in LA has gone from 12 hours to just 6, so I don’t have to worry about booking a room or anything, I’ll just stay at the airport. Yawn. But I’ll have lots of time for blogging for you fine people!

An added bonus to my trip is my new companion Tabby. He’s my niece Maddie’s stuffed tabby cat. I wanted something to take photos of at places I go to (we have a long standing family “tradition” of taking pictures with stuffed things. Ask about Snuggle to any of my siblings or Mom). So Tabby will be my travel companion, guide, drinking buddy and conscience at times I’m sure. *Cue music from Castaway “WILSONNNNN!!!!” Or rather “TAABBBBYYYYY!!!”

So I’m off to dreamland/tossing & turning. Leaving the house at 8am Toronto time, sharp! Good night, hang tight.

xoxo
Caro

You’seTube

I decided today I’m going to create a YouTube channel and post all my silly goings-on while I’m traveling in Australia. I was particularly inspired by my cousin Bria who is currently traveling in Korea. She posted a hilarious vid of people demonstrating candy making – it’s just the sort of perfect travel thing to capture – people showing how something unique to their country is being made – and making it completely endearing by attempting a lot of it in a sing-songy way. Brilliant!
That said, I’m really hoping I can find anything half as fabulous as that (“in English! Oh. My. God. O. M. G. Jesus Christ My Lord!”). You really need to see it. I’ll work my magic and see if I can post it here. Too enjoyable not to share!
19 more sleeps…. 😉
watch video here. hopefully it works?!

Crossfit & Paleo: Pre-Aussie Work

Recently I was inspired by my friend Jenn. I’m always inspired by her really, but she doesn’t know that (hi Jenn, you’re my hero BTW). Jenn loves running – she recently trained and completed a 10k, I followed her Instagram posts, pics of her and her two friends happy, smiling and tired at the finish line. Even prior to the run, I would listen to stories of her training for it, how far she had come, how she pushes herself to go further every day, how hard it is, but how much she loves it. And she would tell me “Sebastian hates that I run”. Sebastian is our chiropractor, but he’s so much more than that to a lot of people. He owns Cafe of Life in Barrie Ontario, and takes a whole health approach to his practice. Why wait for your back to hurt before you see him (like I did)? If you are going on a regular basis (no, that does not mean once every 3 months Bob) you will be taking preventative steps to back health. And since our beautiful wonderful spines protect our entire nervous system, which feeds all of our organs, tissues, brains and extremities, why *wouldn’t* you take care of that? Anyway, a while back, we’re talking at least 2 or 3 years now, Sebastian introduced Scott & I to the Whole30. It’s a strict Paleo diet/cleanse. Which opened up a whole new way of life – people who eat like cavemen (in short: no diary, grains, legumes or refined sugar). But Paleo goes way beyond food, it speaks to how our bodies were designed to break down certain foods, digest and function. It also is a way of living that speaks to how our bodies were designed to move. Using all of our muscles in tandem, to achieve the goal of capturing our prey, long walks for foraging for our leafy greens and berries, how we should be able to jump up to that limb on a tree to avoid an animal attack. This way of working out is essentially what Crossfit is all about. Sebastian is a hard-core crossfitter – as is his wife Kara and I’ve even seen their two very young kids mimicking their parents with crossfit at the playground! Amazing! In this way of thinking, we break away from the mentality that we should be ‘isolating’ our muscle groups like we have been doing, but rather use them all together to perform exercises that really push us. Hard. That doesn’t really include running. Sprinting, yes, but not running for 10k certainly. It’s too hard on our bodies (they didn’t have asphalt in caveman days I guess!) and there are better and faster ways to get the cardio strength and muscle strength we’re looking to achieve. Therefore, Sebastian didn’t like my friend Jenn was running so much – and having to get adjusted a lot to compensate for it too!

So, Jenn started a crossfit workout today that is inspiring me to do the same. Having said that, I recognize that 80% of weight loss is what goes in your mouth, so I’m aiming to do a “modified” paleo as well. I find paleo a bit rigid and hard to follow at times, and I’m giving myself permission to eat things that would normally be off-limits, but don’t seem to disagree with me, like rice or rice noodles. The biggest changes for us (I’m including Scott in the “us” here) is junk food (me), and portions (Scott). Now that I’m about to travel half way around the world, I’m hyper-aware that I won’t be able to sustain this as easily as home due to eating out more than usual I’m guessing, but I do want to try, and perhaps even be a *little* smaller by the time I hit Brisbane. 🙂 So where do we go from here? The beginning.

There will simply be things that I will not be able to do starting out, but that’s all part of it isn’t it? Once I’m able to do them, I can say “hey, there was a time I couldn’t even do 1 of these!”, and I look forward to that. I’m hopefully going to get some Crossfit WODs (Workout of the Day) from Sebastian to get me started, I’ll do what I can and if I can’t, I’ll just change how many I start with – do 10 instead of 15. Keep it easy-breasy. It’s not like I’m trying to lose all my weight in 6 weeks to look awesome in a bikini. For those of you who know me, that’s a scary damn thought. No I’m doing the marathon on this one, trying to stay motivated, no matter if it’s summer, I’m on vacation, or I’m uncomfortable – being this big IS uncomfortable!! I’d rather not be TYVM. Until then, I’ll leave you with the image of a “sweat angel”. Just learned this term today while getting adjusted by Seb – and I think it’s awesome!! After these workouts, you literally do fall on the floor and are immobile for a long time, thus creating the sweat angel. 🙂
